Paddy O'Halloran is a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of History and Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WiSER) at the University of the Witwatersrand. His research interests include African history, Irish history, popular politics, and citizenship. Previously, he was affiliated with the Unit for the Humanities at Rhodes University (UHURU), where his research considered the question of 'urban' and 'rural' through the perspectives of social movement activists. Paddy's current research focuses on xenophobia in South African history, with a view to theorise xenophobia as a politics beyond the present-day explanations around neoliberalism and the nation-state. His publications have appeared in the Journal of Asian and African StudiesInterface, and the Journal of Contemporary African Studies. Paddy also writes as a freelance journalist.
