South Africa is in sore need of an improvement in our ethical and moral conduct, both in the private and public sectors. This course is for those who would like to develop a deeper understanding of ethics and what it means to live a ‘good’ life as a human person, with a particular focus on the world of work and ethical behaviour in the workplace.  The course aims to interrogate what we mean when we talk of ‘ethics’ and of ‘being ethical’ and to try to broaden our understanding of both ethics and of ‘work’ and of those who work.

Work does not take place in a vacuum, but in a 21st century global and local economic, social and organisational context. This context provides many challenges both ethical and otherwise for those who work, whether as leaders, as managers or as employees. The course will provide a basis for the identification and discussion of some of these challenges, as well as for differentiating ethical issues and challenges from the non-ethical. It will discuss ethics in the context of organisational culture and will enable participants to understand the ethical implications of decisions and actions within a work context. Finally, the course aims to provide a basis for understanding what it means to be ethical in a 21st century work context.

Offered over the course of a day (Wednesday, 31 August, 08h00 – 17h00), the Course is presented by Prof Marilise SMURTHWAITE, Academic Dean at St Augustine and specialist in Applied Ethics.

At the end of each of the Courses, an attendance certificate will be awarded.
