St Augustine College has created an award to honour people who have made outstanding contributions to the common good or who have made significant and exceptional contributions to the academic endeavour, particularly those that contribute in some way to the welfare and betterment of society. This is in line with the College’s mission of ethical leadership and its commitment to the common good. In the same way as a state university would award an honorary degree, so St Augustine College created the Bonum Commune Award. The first to be awarded the privilege were:

Archbishop Pius Ncube of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was honoured for his courageous stand against human rights abuse committed by the government of his country, for his defence of the millions of powerless and deprived, hungry citizens of Zimbabwe, and his self sacrificing work for the common good. |

Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in the Vatican, was honoured for having achieved distinction in theology, for his commitment to ecumenism, his untiring work for the promotion of Christian unity and inter-religious dialogue, in recognition of his strong and sustained support – moral, financial and academic – and for his belief in this College as a Catholic university in Southern Africa. |
