Our school offers a Bachelor of Commerce as well as postgraduate qualifications in philosophy and applied ethics. The common themes in our school are the production and critical assessment of argument, discernment of what can be known reliably, and the moral basis of personal life and social arrangements.
We are committed to instilling active and life-long learning habits in our students. Between them, teachers in the school have many decades of teaching and research experience. They aim to combine the best in the long tradition of university teaching with preparation of students for a 21st century future. The College has state of the art equipment to assist staff and students in all professional modes of knowledge acquisition and communication.
Small classes, tutorials and computer laboratory sessions will make it possible for each student to communicate extensively with his or her teachers to discuss points of interest and to resolve learning difficulties. Hard work is expected, in return for which students will be extended to the limits of their capabilities. The Bachelor of Commerce is unusual in combining study in philosophy, politics and economics with ancillary courses in accounting, commercial law and mathematics and statistics. It will be of particular use to future strategic thinkers in both the public and private sectors. Particular attention will be paid to the rapidly changing global situation and what it means for South Africans.
The postgraduate qualifications include a Master’s degree in Applied Ethics. Two specializations are available: Business Ethics and Social and Political Ethics. A Master’s degree in Philosophy is also available. These degrees combine course work with a dissertation. Suitably qualified students may also enroll to write a DPhil thesis.
