The President of St Augustine College is the equivalent of a Vice-Chancellor or Rector. As such the work of the President is to lead the College and to act as the principal custodian of its Statutes and its well-being. The President is appointed by the Board of Directors in consultation with the Grand Chancellor of the College (His Grace the Archbishop of Johannesburg, Buti Thlagale).
Dr Michael van Heerden (pictured left) assumed office as the second President of the College in June 2008, succeeding the Founding President, Professor Edith Raidt who had been in Office between 1999-2008.
Prior to his appointment to St Augustine College, Dr van Heerden had been Rector of the Cape Town Diocesan Seminary, where he was also a specialist in philosophy.
He is featured regularly in local news publications in the Catholic Church and has edited two major scholarly volumes on C.S.Peirce: Categories to Constantinople (1998) and Creation, Recreation, and Consumation (2001).
Dr van Heerden was inaugrated as the second President of the College in August 2008 by the Grand Chancellor, Archbishop Thlagale. Dr van Heerden holds degrees from the Urbaniana (Rome), UNISA (South Africa), and Leuven (Belgium).
