Operating within the Catholic tradition of humanistic learning and its relevance to the needs of campus2.jpeglarger South African society and the Church universally, the School of Theology aims to be a centre of academic excellence in biblical studies, Christian ethics, church history, liturgy, pastoral theology, spirituality and systematic theology. Our programmes will provide the student with a solid formation in classical Christian thought as well as modern developments in theological methods. These courses will focus on developing the learner’s skills in critical thinking, integrating knowledge, and developing the capacity to engage with current modes of thought through an understanding of the complementarity between faith and reason.

Studentsb.jpgTo help realize the mission of the College which is intellectual and ethical leadership in Africa, the School of Theology sets itself two goals, namely , to promote excellence in teaching, research and publication in the area of theology and related disciplines, and to provide the  training of lay and clerical leaders  who will serve both the Catholic Church and other Christian churches in South Africa and the African text. In pursuit of these goals, the school places an emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach and the collaboration with other schools of the College, on the ecumenical and interreligious dimensions of all theological studies, on the exploration of the relationship between the Christian religion and the promotion of efforts to work for justice and gender equality both within the church and the world in the distinctive light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In particular, the School of Theology aims to:

• promote the integrity and creativity of Catholic thought and practice within an ecumenical context
• provide an understanding of theology that is pastoral and practical in focus
• encourage dialogue between the wider Catholic tradition and contemporary secular culture in areas  such as ethics, politics, gender issues,  social justice, economics, spirituality and art
• support and facilitate interfaith communication within the multicultural and multi-faith situation of  South Africa today
• develop the skills necessary for ecclesial ministry and pastoral leadership
• deepen the appreciation of the sacred in personal experience and social life
• to teach with a cognizance of the dynamics between religion and culture in contemporary life.
