Robert J. Balfour, an NRF rated scholar, is Registrar at St Augustine College, and Honorary Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He obtained his PhD at Cambridge and has held fellowships at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (London) and Clare Hall (Cambridge).
Robert has led several major research projects in South Africa: the English Language Certification Project: 2000-2002; the Language, Gender, and Equity Project (with Elizabeth de Kadt, UKZN): 2003-2005; the Rural Teacher Education Project: 2007-2008; and The Project for Postgraduate Education Research: 2007-2010. His area of research expertise and publication is in language policy, language learning, postcolonial literature, initial teacher education and rurality studies.
In addition to the above, he is also an exhibited artist (in the UK and South Africa), a published poet, and a writer of short fiction. Professor Balfour was awarded the C rating in 2009.

Roger Deacon, an NRF rated scholar, was appointed Honorary Research Fellow to St Augustine College in 2009. Dr Deacon, who obtained his PhD in Political Philosophy at the University of Natal, was an academic at the University of Natal, before pursuing an independent research career.
He is a well known researcher in education and currently Chairs the NRF Panel on Education Research Rating. Dr Deacon has held honorary appointments in Politics and Education at the Universities of Natal, and KwaZulu-Natal, respectively. Most recently Roger has headed up (with Dr Rukhsana Osman, Wits School of Education) the NRF project which has surveyed published education research in South Africa between 1996-2006. A historian and political scientist by training, he has authored one of the truly outstanding, internationally acclaimed, studies on the work of Michel Foucault. Dr Deacon was awarded the B rating in 2007.
