Alastair lectured at the old Johannesburg College of Education and then moved into school management at St Luke’s Senior College (Deputy Principal: Academic), Holy Family College (Principal), Sacred Heart College (Principal: Junior High School); Christian Brother’s College Pretoria (Head of High School). Left running schools to much younger people and returned to the classroom at Sacred Heart College in 2010. In 2016, he accepted the part-time position of the Acting Head of Education at St Augustine College.

The MA looked at government racial policies in the 1920s while the MEd studied issues in the history of independent education in South Africa.
