From the dawn of human history, knowledge has been the tool used by men and women to build a better world. Knowledge is much more than a collection of facts. It is the ability to see the world in new ways; to dream of better futures; to create visions that inspire people to live better lives. Perhaps the word wisdom is a better name for this first order human capacity. It is just such a capacity that the small,
independent college named after the African philosopher and saint, Augustine,
seeks to develop in its students. Across a range of disciplines often described
as the humanities, but perhaps better described in German as
die Geisteswissenschaften– literally "knowledge of the mind
and spirit" – St Augustine’s offers world class teachers, small classes,
and content that seeks to engage universal ideas with local experience.
I can think of no better place to prepare for leadership
in South Africa in the 21st century.
