Certificate in Political Leadership

The Certificate in Political Leadership (CPL) is an undergraduate one-year part-time programme. Originally developed in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, it aims to provide an education in politics and political leadership to those who have not had the benefit of tertiary education in this field.

The Certificate in Political Leadership focuses on such questions as:

  • What is democracy?
  • How do democratic systems work?
  • South African democracy – its development and forms
  • Local and community-based politics
  • Human rights and the rule of law
  • Political ethics and developing an ethic for politicians

The programme comprises compulsory and elective courses offered on a one week, block release basis. Two modules are offered in one week –usually one module in the morning, another in the afternoon. Students are assessed both formatively and summatively using a variety of assessment methods.
